An Ion is an atom or molecule that has gained or lost an electron. If an atom or molecule loses an electron, it has a net positive charge and is called a Positive ion. On the other hand, if an atom or molecule gains an electron, it has net negative charge and is called a Negative ion.

In the environment around us, we find thousands of negative and positive ions. But, negative ions are the one which gives us a good feeling and a relaxed mind. Negative ions are odourless, tasteless, and invisible molecules that we inhale in abundance in certain environments. Negative ions can be found commonly throughout the nature. The places where we can find negative ions are near waterfalls, oceans, beaches, after and during rain storm, after lightening, near mountains, etc. Do you feel relaxed when you are near beaches, or nearby waterfalls? This is due to the presence of billions of negative ions.

Scientific studies shown that negatively ionized atmospheres improve performance, increase work capacity, sharpen mental functioning, and reduce stress. Negative ions have air cleaning properties. If the concentration of negative ions is increased, the air will be cleaned. Airborne dust and other common pollutants are positively charged. The negatively charged ion molecule binds to the positively charged pollutant, causing the air impurity to fall to the ground surface and out of one’s breathing space.

When we talk about positive ions, we find these ions mainly in the polluted areas, in indoors with no proper ventilation, indoors having Air-Conditioning, and also near to Televisions, Computers, etc. At these places negative ions whatever present in the environment gets neutralized by the positive ions that are emitted from those systems. The modern technology made us in depriving negative ions and more exposed to positive ions which are bad to our health. Some people become very depressed when negative ions count become less especially during winters. This is something called seasonal depression.

So, how can we find or generate negative ions indoors?

There are some ways in order to generate negative ions indoors. Some of which are growing some plants indoors, or keeping an indoor fountain. You can also use a mechanical means such as air ionisers or negative ion generators that produces negatively-charged ions which can assist in reducing airborne and surface borne contaminants and improving bodily function.

How Negative ions affect Brain?

Generally speaking, negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain; resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy,” says Pierce J. Howard, PhD, author of The Owners Manual for the Brain: Everyday Applications from Mind Brain Researchand director of research at the Center for Applied Cognitive Sciences in Charlotte, N.C.

In fact, Marian Diamond, a professor of neuroanatomy at the University of California, Berkeley, has found that levels of negative ions are inversely related to levels of serotonin in the brain. When you are deprived of negative ions, serotonin levels increase which cause sleeplessness, irritability and tension.

So, we all need negative ions to heal our bodies and improve bodily functions.
